FACTS ABOUT DAIRY & MILK

WHAT WE THINK WE KNOW

Milk and dairy are the topics of much controversy. The mainstream medical community seems persistent in the fact that drinking milk prevents osteoporosis and other bone related diseases. Many doctors in this same industry along with alternative practitioners feel it is not necessary to drink cow’s milk and have proven its link to many health problems. Many agree with this as more and more people become intolerant and allergic to refined milk and dairy products.

PASTEURIZATION

Pasteurization is the process of heat treating milk to kill bacteria. This was first used as a temporary solution to clean up dirty milk in the late 1800s, but they soon realized it covered up dirty milk and increased shelf life for larger profits. Raw milk consumption soon became demonized and blamed for all sorts of outbreaks and sickness in the campaign to convince the public that pasteurization was necessary. Raw milk naturally contains healthy bacteria that prevent growth of undesirable and dangerous organisms. Without these bacteria milk is more open to contamination. When you heat food you begin destroying nutrients and good bacteria and this holds very true with milk. Vitamins B6 and B12 are completely destroyed along with up to 65% loss of A, C, D & E. Pasteurization also destroys enzymes, antibodies, hormones and lipase. Lipase is an enzyme that breaks down fat and would help the breakdown of the fat in natural milk. Very little calcium is actually absorbed from drinking pasteurized milk as all phosphatase (necessary for absorption of calcium by the body) is destroyed.

Ultra pasteurization, which involves longer treatment and higher temperatures, is deemed necessary as microorganisms have become resistant to the heat. This also increases shelf life to four weeks. This milk is virtually dead and many complain of a burnt and dead taste. It is written on most milk containers in very small print as they do not want to advertise it. This milk can actually stay unrefrigerated until opened.

HOMOGENIZATION

Homogenization is the process of breaking up fat globules and distributing them through the milk so they do not rise. This process exposes fat to the air and oxidation occurs which decreases the stability of it. Milk that is straight from the cow contains cream which rises to the top and separates in its natural state.

WHAT ARE THE REPURCUSSIONS

Dairy cows have an average life span of 42 months, whereas a cow on pasture lives 12 to 15 years. In the U.S. the dairy industry creates an estimated amount of pollution equal to that of 150,000,000 people. Most of that slips into lakes, rivers and streams which eventually comes to us. Cows are naturally vegetarians, but on a commercial farm there is no grass to feed on. The bulk of their feed consists of corn and soy which itself is loaded with pesticides. 40,000,000,000 pounds of slaughterhouse waste along with dead animals, anything derived from plant cellulose, other animals manure and human sewage are also thrown in the mix. Growth Hormones along with 55% of all antibiotics produced are mixed directly into animal feed. These things have been cause of many human / animal diseases.
